Absorption coefficient of Aluminum with β-rays

Purpose: -

Study β-ray absorption by aluminum absorber and determine the amount of weight loss.

Apparatus: -

GM Tube, GM counter, Radioactive (Beta source)

Theory: -

equilibrium measurement of the rate of radiation loss as it passes through a given object or a fraction of the eventful radiant energy absorbed by each unit or the thickness of the eraser.

 Process: -

1. Adjust the Aluminum absorber by increasing the size.

2. To maintain a constant operating voltage (450V), find the background calculation.

3. Place the source β in the source holder next to the detector window.

4. Place an aluminum absorber with a minimum value for each area between the source and the detector in the repair area. Note the 30-second count.

5. Repeat the test of 30 different samples for each growing area used. And a decrease in order. Calculate the value of the scale and therefore the correct calculation (N).

6. Plan a graph plan

7. The slope of the graph is the size -ve but the absorbent coefficient µ is the maximum.

Tabular column:-

Note: -

1. Sourced used ________ (e.g.

2. Operating Capacity (Vo) ________V volumes

3. The background count is 30 seconds. b

4. Mean

Calculation: -

Slope = AB / BC _______

A1-absorber absorption equilibrium µ = -2.303 (slope) = _______ cm

Nature of Graph:-

Results: -

The absorption coefficient of A1-absorber is µ = ___ cm/ mg
